Summary

The Rogue Barbell cleaning kit is a simple solution that includes a 3-in-1 oil and a nylon brush, all for under $10.

Pros

  • Decent price point.
  • Stiff nylon brush cleans without scratching up your barbells.
  • 3-in-1 oil is high quality.

Cons

  • Nylon brush isn’t great for tougher rust-based cleaning jobs.

I spent a lot of time in my reviews discussing the spin of my barbells. A product such as the Rogue Barbell Cleaning Kit helps maintain proper spin, providing a better and safer lifting experience.

Spin matters because it reduces the force produced by the inertia of weight plates; this helps you lift stronger. Spinning your barbell sleeves also helps protect your wrist and elbow from injury caused by a more jarring experience.

I purchased the Rogue Barbell Cleaning Kit, which includes a tough bristled brush and 3-in-1 oil mainly because I trust Rogue’s products and because $12.50 it was a cheap price to pay for a product that will last me a relatively long time. Remember, you can purchase a 3-in-1 oil from your local hardware store if you’re on a time crunch.

The nylon brush that comes included is what I’ve come to expect from Rogue, the handle is solid and the bristles are nice and stiff while still providing just enough give to evenly distribute the 3-in-1 oil across the barbell components.

That said because I clean my barbells on a regular schedule, I don’t tend to have issues with rusting or too much chalk, and other gunk stuck in my knurling.

If your goal is to restore a full bar, you might want to consider purchasing a wire brass brush that will penetrate into hard-to-clean areas much better than the Rogue brush. While other reviewers have asked for a stronger brush, I prefer not to scuff up my Cerakote-finished bars and therefore, I sacrifice a little more elbow grease with the nylon option.

I use the Rogue barbell cleaning kit every 3 months during the colder months and every month during the more humid spring and summer days. My schedule is based on humidity levels which can cause rusting when not kept in check.

During the summer, I tend to use more chalk because the magnesium does a great job of soaking up extra moisture, but it does little to keep my bearings spinning at their original level, and my bar starts to look messy.

How To Use The Rogue Barbell Cleaning Kit

Applying Rogue’s multi-purpose oil is very simple with this product. Rogue has chosen a nozzle with a small spout which makes dripping oil into place a breeze without overusing the product, which doesn’t add any additional benefit.

I leave the oil in place for a few minutes and then brush my knurling and other problem areas with the brush. I always clean my entire bar with full disassembly to ensure a consistent clean and wipe it down with a dry microfiber cloth before reassembly.

Each barbell varies, but Rogue Fitness has a great video that showcases how to take apart their barbells for cleaning. The general principles of this video tend to apply to most Olympic barbells.

Overall, for $12.50 you can’t go wrong with this kit. Check out user reviews and find more info for the Roguge Barbell Cleaning Kit Here.
